Blind Pilot supports The Nature Conservancy
Blind Pilot has done a wonderful video supporting the Nature Conservancy. It is shot in the net shed in Astoria that is out on the Columbia River and a barn in Clatsop County. It speaks of the importance of place, both the landscape and the buildings, and of how this supports the making of musics and…

Old is New
The Cool Hunter website has some beautiful photos of modern additions and insertions of new buildings and elements into old historic buildings. In all of them, the new is juxtaposed to the old rather than trying to restore the building to an original state, or reuse a traditional or classical architectural vocabulary. This approach is…

Depot Update, Astoria
The grout has been cut out from all the joints and the building has been pressure washed. The masons are now pinning the face brick back to the structural brick. Once this is completed they will start re-pointing. The demolition of the interior partitions has been completed and you can see the grandeur of the…

Adams Street, Cannon Beach
The round window picks up the swoop of the masonry chimney, whose pattern of stones reflects the pattern of the cedar shingles above. Architecture should include delight and this vignette is seen by everyone entering the house.

Pilot Station, Astoria
This renovation project gave new life to historic waterfront industrial buildings in Astoria. The building changed from industrial use to retail use, but windows and siding were replaced to match the original style and locations. The building was seismically upgraded and has new electrical, plumbing and heating systems. Care was taken to distinguish old from…
